Significance & Origin
Tarpan is the ritual offering of water mixed with sesame seeds to ancestors, gods, and sages, performed to express gratitude and seek their continued blessings and protection.
Origin Story
In the Mahabharata, as Bhishma Pitamah lay on his bed of arrows awaiting his chosen moment of death, he imparted extensive knowledge to Yudhishthira on dharma, duty, and the importance of honoring one's ancestors through Tarpan. He explained that a descendant who offers water with sincere devotion to their forefathers ensures that the ancestors continue to bless the family with prosperity and protection, just as Bhishma himself had honored his own forefathers throughout his long life of duty and sacrifice.
