Origin Story
The Vishnu Purana tells of Diti, who performed penance to conceive a son capable of defeating Indra. Her husband, sage Kashyapa, warned her to observe strict purity during the ritual period, but Diti once fell asleep with her feet unwashed, breaking the sanctity of the rite. Indra, aware of this lapse, entered her womb and split the fetus into pieces using his thunderbolt, and from these pieces were born the Maruts instead of the intended powerful son. This story is cited as the reason Simantonnayana places such importance on maintaining purity, calm and protection for the mother throughout pregnancy.
