Origin Story
The Shiv Purana recounts how the demon Dushan once terrorized the residents of Avantika (ancient Ujjain), disrupting their Vedic rituals. A devoted boy named Shrikhar continued worshipping a Shiv Ling despite the demon's threats, and when Dushan attempted to destroy it, Lord Shiva emerged directly from the earth and reduced the demon to ashes with a mere glance. The residents, in gratitude, requested Shiva to remain there permanently, and he manifested as the self-born Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, said to derive its power directly from the earth itself rather than being installed by human hands.
