Significance & Origin
Rudrabhishek is the ceremonial bathing of the Shiv Ling with sacred substances while chanting Rudra mantras from the Yajurveda, performed to seek protection, health, and liberation from suffering.
Origin Story
According to the Shiv Purana and Markandeya Purana, when the young sage Markandeya was destined to die at the age of sixteen, he clung to the Shiv Ling and prayed with utmost devotion. When Yama, the god of death, arrived to take his soul, Lord Shiva emerged from the Ling and struck Yama down, granting Markandeya eternal life. This is the origin of the Mahamrityunjaya tradition, and Rudrabhishek is performed invoking this same protective form of Shiva.

Rudri Path
Chapters of the Rudri from the Yajurveda are recited continuously through the ceremony.
Abhishek
The Shiv Ling is bathed with milk, curd, honey, water and other sacred substances in sequence.
Bilva Patra & Aarti
Bilva leaves and flowers are offered, followed by the concluding aarti.
