Pitru Paksha is a sixteen-lunar-day period considered the most powerful window in the entire year to honor ancestors, during which pind daan, tarpan and charitable acts carry significantly amplified spiritual merit.
Origin Story
The Mahabharata narrates that after the great warrior Karna died in battle, he was welcomed into heaven where a plate of gold and jewels was placed before him instead of food. Confused, Karna asked Lord Indra the reason, and was told that throughout his life he had generously donated gold and wealth but had never once offered food or water in the name of his ancestors, so he received back exactly what he had given. Karna requested a chance to correct this, and was sent back to earth for sixteen days to perform proper shraddha and donate food and water in his ancestors' names. This sixteen-day period came to be permanently observed by all as Pitru Paksha, the most sacred time for honoring one's forefathers.
