Origin Story
The Puranas narrate the story of King Bhagirath, whose ancestors, the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara, had been reduced to ashes by the curse of sage Kapila and could not attain liberation. Bhagirath performed severe penance for many years to bring the celestial river Ganga down to earth, so that her sacred waters could touch their ashes and grant them moksha. This legendary act of devotion for one's ancestors became the foundation of all Pitra-related rituals, teaching that descendants carry the responsibility of liberating their forefathers through sincere effort and sacred rites.
