Origin Story
The Devi Mahatmyam describes the fierce battle between Goddess Chandika and the demon Raktabija, whose blood, upon touching the ground, would instantly give birth to a thousand identical demon clones, making him seemingly unstoppable. Goddess Kali, emerging from Chandika's fury, solved this by drinking every drop of his blood before it could touch the earth, finally ending his terror. This story is often cited to explain why Nav Chandi's nine-fold repetition is considered necessary — some obstacles multiply faster than they can be countered by ordinary effort, requiring an equally multiplied spiritual response.
