Origin Story
The Shiv Purana recounts that when the sage Mrikandu and his wife performed severe penance for a son, Lord Shiva granted them a choice between a foolish son who would live long, or a wise son destined to live only sixteen years. They chose wisdom, and their son Markandeya was born. When death approached him at sixteen, his unwavering chant of this very mantra while embracing the Shiv Ling moved Lord Shiva to personally intervene and grant him immortality. Families invoke this same mantra today with the same faith Markandeya's parents once placed in Shiva.
