Origin Story
The Shiv Purana tells of the young sage Markandeya, who was destined to die at the age of sixteen. As Yama, the god of death, arrived to claim his soul, Markandeya clung tightly to the Shiv Ling he was worshipping and chanted this very mantra with complete devotion. Moved by his faith, Lord Shiva himself emerged from the Ling and struck down Yama, granting Markandeya immortality. Since then, the Mahamrityunjaya mantra has been chanted by devotees seeking protection from disease, accidents, and untimely death, with Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar considered the most powerful place to invoke this exact form of Shiva.
