Origin Story
As described in the Shiv Purana, Lord Brahma once spoke arrogantly, claiming supreme superiority over Shiva during a heated exchange among the gods. Enraged by this arrogance, a fierce form of Shiva known as Kaal Bhairav emerged and severed one of Brahma's five heads with his fingernail. Because he had committed the sin of decapitation, Kaal Bhairav was cursed to wander the earth as an ascetic carrying the skull, until he arrived at Ujjain, where his sin was finally absolved. Since then, he has resided permanently in this city as its fierce guardian deity (Kotwal), protecting all devotees who visit Mahakaleshwar.
