The Matsya Purana tells of Vastu Purush, a formidable demon whose massive body once blocked the sky and troubled the three worlds, until the devas collectively overpowered him and pressed him face-down onto the earth, each god holding a part of his body. In gratitude for being allowed to remain alive, Vastu Purush was granted the boon that anyone who worships him before building or occupying a home would be blessed with peace and freedom from disturbances arising from his position beneath the structure. Griha Shanti Puja continues this tradition to pacify Vastu Purush for a harmonious household.
