Significance & Origin
Ganesh Puja is performed at the start of any auspicious work to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the god of wisdom and new beginnings.
Origin Story
As told in the Shiv Purana, Goddess Parvati created a boy from turmeric paste to guard her door. When Lord Shiva returned and was denied entry, an enraged battle followed in which the boy's head was severed. To console Parvati, Shiva sent his followers to bring the head of the first creature found, which was an elephant. The boy was revived with an elephant head and named Ganesha, later blessed by all devas to be worshipped first before any undertaking.

Sankalp
The purpose and intent of the puja is formally declared before beginning the rituals.
Ganesh Avahan
Lord Ganesha is invoked and invited into the idol or Kalash with Vedic mantras.
Shodashopchar Puja
Sixteen traditional steps of worship including bathing, dressing and offering flowers are performed.
Aarti & Prasad
The puja concludes with aarti and distribution of modak and other prasad to all present.
