Durga Saptashati, also known as the Devi Mahatmyam, is a sacred text of 700 verses across thirteen chapters glorifying Goddess Durga's victories over evil, recited in full to invoke her protection and strength.
Origin Story
The text itself narrates how King Suratha, having lost his kingdom and been betrayed by his own ministers, wandered into the forest in deep despair. There, sage Medha Rishi consoled him by narrating the glory of Goddess Durga through these very seven hundred verses, explaining how she had repeatedly saved the universe from demonic forces that even the gods could not defeat. Inspired by this narration, King Suratha performed penance to the Goddess and eventually regained his kingdom, establishing the Durga Saptashati as the definitive text recited whenever strength and restoration are sought.
