Origin Story
The Puranas describe Bhoomi Devi as the earth goddess who patiently bears the weight of all living beings and their constructions upon her. When King Prithu once sought to cultivate the earth for the welfare of his people, Bhoomi Devi appeared before him in the form of a cow, agreeing to yield her resources for humanity's benefit only if approached with respect and proper rites. This established the tradition of seeking her permission and blessings before disturbing the earth for any construction, which continues today through Bhoomi Pujan.
